Livable Maunalua Hui Logo

Our original name, Livable Hawaii Kai Hui, was created back in 2004 to acknowledge the neighborhood we share and our goal of improving it for all generations. However, we recognize that in the grand scheme of things, Hawaii Kai is just a small piece of the area’s history. People should know that Maunalua is more than just a bay. This is why we support efforts to revitalize and promote not only our history, but present and future iterations of Hawaiian culture in the area.

In support of using proper place names, we changed our name from Livable Hawaii Kai Hui to Livable Maunalua Hui. "Maunalua" is the name of our community, and it far predates the name "Hawaii Kai" which was established in the late ‘60s by developer Henry J. Kaiser.

Livable
Sustainable development isn’t just about houses, roads, and commerce, but connectivity, community, culture, open spaces and more.
Maunalua
“Maunalua” is the name of our community that dates back centuries, referring to the area’s iconic “two mountains.”
Hui
We're an inclusive, diverse community whose kākou (altogether) effort keeps these lands thriving. The ‘āina (land) calls us to collective action.
When you say you live in Hawaii Kai, you're talking about a history that is 60 years old; when you say Maunalua, you're talking about a history that is 1000 years old.
